Soldier Returning home

I take a step into my house, the first thing that I can smell is the nice turkey dinner that we are having, as it is Thanksgiving. My dog Taz runs to me barking with joy and happiness, I drop my stuff as he leaps into my arms. My younger sister starts running from the other side of the house yelling:

“Jackson’s home! Jackson’s home!” with excitement.

“Devon!” I respond, tears fill my eyes; my sight is blurry.

“The family is in the kitchen” Devon says.

As we turn the corner the wood floor creaks under us, and there they are standing there in shock. It was silent for a few seconds because they couldn’t get over the fact that I was home. I go back to the door and gather my stuff and bring it to the kitchen for the family to look at. The stove beeps. “Looks like dinner is ready” I say. We sit down at the diner table and as we sit down my eyes fill with tears again. As I remember that a bunch of families don’t get to celebrate Thanksgiving as their son has died on the field. We say a prayer to God, before we eat thanking him for my return.

Dinner finished and we all have collected our emotions and are now spending time together in the backyard. We hear something in the woods so I run back inside and grab my weapon and when I make it back outside a deer comes out of the woods.

My dad says to my mom “Let the PTSD start.”

“Tell me about it” she responds.

I put my gun back and my dad starts up a fire, we roast marshmallows together and have a peaceful rest of the night and we enjoy the rest of the time that we have together.
